USA 1776 – Haiti 1804: Two Bourgeois Revolutions

Dr. Philippe Marius from the Anthropology Department will exam the parallels between the revolution by the 13 North American colonies that declared their Independence from Britain in 1776 to become the USA and the one in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, which in 1804 created Haiti, the first nation-state of a black people in Western modernity.

The two are linked by the French Revolution of 1789, which destroyed the monarchy in France in 1792 and abolished slavery in all French colonies in 1794. On the way to political independence and thereafter Haiti’s Founding Fathers and the US Founding Fathers had to cope with the vexing fact that wealth in their world was primarily created by enslaved workers, and both countries today must cope with legacies of this fact.
